Thirty-five students studying abroad with Syracuse University were killed on Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland on December 21, 1988. Since the disaster there have been strong links forged between Syracuse University the people of Lockerbie.

As part of these links a number of students from Lockerbie Academy have taken part in the Lockerbie Scholars programme. Each year two students from Lockerbie, Scotland are selected to study at Syracuse for a year. These students represent the Lockerbie 11, and Syracuse’s University’s commitment to Remembrance.

As well as this link with Lockerbie Academy Syracuse University has also built up an extensive archive. The Pan Am Flight 103/Lockerbie Air Disaster Archives were established in 1990.

  • bring together in one place materials generated regarding the disaster and make those materials available for research, and
  • provide a place to personalize our students whose lives were lost; where their families can donate materials by or about them to let the world know in some way what has been lost by their deaths.

In 2006 the scope of the Archives was expanded to include all 270 victims.

Included in the collection are newspaper and magazine clippings, photographs, information on trials, government documents, books, audio and videotapes, posters, exhibit materials, and items specific to individual victims.
